Notes:

Most references give Abigail's name as Bayless, but it has never been proven. this RootsWeb entry and other sources show her parents as Daniel Bayless and Johannah Lake.
A Bayless researcher writes that there is no known record of a daughter Abigail for this couple, or of a marriage to a Hinds.
There was also a John Bayless who was administrator of John Henry's will. He could be Abigail's father.

John Henry Hinds had a brother-in-law Joseph Seaton, and probably named his last son for him. He also had a brother in law Francis Maybury/Mayberry, mentioned in the TN land grants. A Mayberry researcher has written to say that Francis married a Hinds.
John Henry had three sisters that I know of: Charity married Richard Higgins, Hannah married Ephraim Leonard, and Mary for whom I haven't found a marriage.
Francis must have married Mary Hinds, unless there is another sister I don't know about.
Joseph Seaton must then be a brother of John Henry's wife.
John Henry was married twice (maybe three times). He married Elizabeth Thomas in 1791, so the Seaton wife must have been the prior one, this Abigail.

If the 1791 date for Elizabeth Thomas is wrong, there could be a different answer. John Henry could have married Joseph's sister as his second wife. Naming his child from this second marriage Joseph S Hinds might indicate that the wife was a Seaton. In this case, Elizabeth Thomas would seem to be the earlier wife, and thus mother of the earlier children.

Another researcher has written to say the 1791 marriage date for John Hinds + Elizabeth Thomas is indeed correct.

There was a John Seaton who lived very close to John Henry Hinds in Roane Co. They were on
Whites Creek.

I originally had Abigail's birth year as 1761, but now I think that was actually their marriage date. I got the birth year of 1744 from some page I forgot to write down.
Maybe 1761 is the birth date of John Henry's second wife Elizabeth Thomas?
